The DraCo, AmigaOS 3.9 and Picasso96 in 10 steps

DraCos come with AmigaOS 3.1, as default. There is a later official AmigaOS 3.9, and installing it on the DraCo is not straightforward, as it crashes or hangs upon first boot. But luckily there is a workaround.

1.First be sure to have a properly working AmigaOS 3.1 install
2.Run the AmigaOS 3.9 installer from its cdrom, and update your system to 3.9
3.Reboot your DraCo into CLI mode (use the Early Startup Menu, "Boot with no startup-sequence" option).

Tip: It is very helpful if you copy a shell icon from an already functioning medium (floppy disk, hard disk partition or other). As long as this medium is available, it will be easy to access a shell.

4.It is very important to use the SetPatch version 44.17 from the AmigaOS 3.9 installations cdrom, outside of the directory "os-version3.9". Do not use any other SetPatch version, (and that also includes the one that is copied from OS3.9-installer on the disk), these other versions seem incompatible with the DraCo and generate a crash. So copy Setpatch 44.17 to your newly installed 3.9 system (in C:).

5.Afterwards you will notice that there is a huge workbench bug that presents itself right after the installation of amigaOS 3.9 (with the correct SetPatch 44.17 as mentioned before). In the next boot any amiga screen opened (PAL/DraCo fake-native or whatever), seems to cause workbench 3.9 to issue an error: when you double click a folder, it  freezes the DraCo or directly crashes.
To work around this error, Picasso96 must be installed, but due to the bug mentioned, can only be done via shell. An outsourced shell icon should be now very useful (see tip above).

6.Remeber to set the most necessary assigns paths by hand (assign LIBS: SYS: add classes, makedir RAM: ENV, assign ENV: RAM: ENV, copy ENVARC: ENV: all, etc .).

7.Now you should start the CLI  and type "SYS: prefs/Picasso96Mode" (Without the ""). There you should select in the menu "Settings attach to board ..." for the existing graphics card (Altais), adjust the screen modes and save the settings.

8.Then reboot the computer, again without startup-sequence, and set the environment variables by hand again, and start the program SYS: Prefs/ScreenMode. Here you can now save and choose a Picasso96 mode.

9.At the next reboot, this time, with startup-sequence, the Picasso96 screen should be opened on the DraCo without any issues.

10. Remeber to enable the "FakeNative modes" in Prefs with the "PVS" program that is included in the Picasso96 archive.
